Our Careers Service offers loads of start-up activities to get your business ready. You could be the next big entrepreneur or freelancer, or even own your own business or work for yourself.

The Essex Start-up Hub located at our Colchester Campus, is jointly coordinated by our employability and business teams to help students like you with 360 support throughout their entrepreneurship journey. As a student or graduate at Essex, you can learn the skills needed to be successful in business and come to the Hub for help in running it.

What can Essex Startups offer you?

Mini bootcamps

All our 4 hour Mini Bootcamps are bitesize and as an Essex student or Graduate you can join as many as you want:

  • Ideas creation and validation - Get real! See if you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Starr generating ideas and see if they actually work.
  • Modelling and planning - The nitty gritty! Develop what it is that your business stands for and define your ideal customer.
  • Redefining - Get out there! Work on your communication skills, understand branding and marketing. Get creative with visionboarding.
  • Business ready - convey your story, get funding and improve your presentation skills.

Essex Startups bootcamp

Get intense!

Join the two-day Bootcamp to move your business forward and for the chance to win up to £3,000 for your business in the Big Pitch. Mentors help you throughout the day to get the most out of it. The Essex Startups Bootcamp is the first step to be then able to attend the Big Pitch event.

If you participate in the two day Essex Startups Bootcamp, you can pitch for up to £3,000 for your business. Essex Startups runs an annual competition in which you can win investment for your startup – no matter if it is just an idea or you have already started.

Essex Business School in Colchester marks the entrance to the Knowledge Gateway, the University’s research and technology park. The Knowledge Gateway also incorporates Parkside Office Village, home to a number of SMEs, and the Innovation Centre; which provides the space plus vital hands-on support to help 50 startup companies scale up and succeed. Plus it's also home to Studio X, space for our students to develop business ideas and for entrepreneurs to connect with the University. The Innovation Centre also houses the University’s Start-Up Hub which helps our students develop an idea for a business into a credible business plan.

 

Essex Business School in Southend-on-Sea shares its space with The Hive Enterprise Centre which helps expose you to the reality of launching a business.

Gain quantitative skills and enhance your degree with Q-Step

Did you know you could be graduating with enhanced quantitative skills simply by enrolling on specific Q-Step modules? If you follow the Q-Step pathway you will receive a qualifier award at the end of your degree which will signal to employers your capability in quantitative research. Whilst taking part in Q-Step you will also get the chance to undertake paid work placements of up to £300 per week.
