Being a multi lingual speaker I’ve always been fascinated by language ever since I was little. I loved poetry, loved reading and I’ve always paid attention to how people speak and different accents.
Then I started my BA in Barcelona in English Studies and when I got to second year I initially was going to study literature; but I had an excellent lecturer that showed me what linguistics was about. I discovered things like universal grammar, psycholinguistics, how language and the brain are connected and how the brain can give us insights about language and I was completely fascinated by this. So I changed my mind completely and started taking courses in different areas of linguistics so grammar, semantics, phonology and I found that I really loved it. When I started teaching English I saw that I could apply all of this theory in the classroom and saw practical value to that and that’s what appealed to me about linguistics.
I already have my PhD offer here at Essex so basically I will start probably next year. Not this year because I’m quite tired after my Masters and want to rest, but definitely the PhD is in my plans and after that a post-doc or whatever else comes after. I really love studying and love research and I’m very passionate about linguistics. I want to pursue an academic career so I look up to my lecturers and am very much aware of their research and what they publish. I try to be up to date with new linguistic trends and new linguistics research and I really admire them and love having them in front of me and reading what they publish, it’s just a pleasure to be honest.
I’ve always had this dream of studying abroad and now I can tick that off my checklist which is great. It’s definitely reached all of my expectations. I also wanted to make new friends and I’ve met people from every corner of the world and that’s great because I really think that these friendships will be long lasting. I really treasure every moment here.
I just try to embrace every moment and try to find happiness in everything that comes and every life circumstance. Just try to adapt, survive and see the beauty in things. You never know what will happen so just enjoy it while we can.
