How to get involved

Students

  • Accommodation is responsible for around 60% of the university’s overall carbon emission figures. Try saving energy by participating in or becoming an ambassador for our #LittleChoicesBigChanges scheme.
  • Volunteer as a Green Impact project assistant
  • Volunteer as a Green Impact Auditor.
  • Donate unwanted goods  at the end of the academic year to the British Heart Foundation at your halls of residence (Colchester and Southend Campuses).
  • Enrol in our Summer School in Sustainable Practice.
  • Sustainable commuting: cycling, car-sharing  or bus travel.
  • Bring a reusable coffee cup to Essex Food outlets and receive a 10p discount on your favourite hot drink. 
  • Refill your water bottle at one of our water coolers (search 'water' on Find Your Way).
  • Reduce waste by advertising your unwanted items on the student small-ads email list.   
  • Get involved in our Festival of Sustainability in March.
  • Campus Garden: Green Thumbs Society.
  • Use our recycling facilities.
  • Visit the weekly street market every Thursday on Square 3 (Colchester Campus).
  • Donate books to the British Heart Foundation at our Colchester Campus book bank.
  • Enjoy honey from our campus beehives
  • Bring your ideas to the sustainability team. We can provide funding for revolutionary new sustainability projects, for more information email us.

Get involved off campus

  • Find out where to buy second hand clothes or where you repair your favourite garments using this interactive map produced by our summer school students: Sustainably Fashionable
  • Join Bennison Farm for a weekly delivery of organic seasonal vegetables, or participate in their Workshare program to work for your veg. 
  • Volunteer for the Essex Wildlife Trust at one of their local reserves. 
  • Join Walk Colchester on one of their outings to experience Colchester’s backyard beauty.

Green Impact

An environmental accreditation programme run with support from the NUS. Bringing staff and students in a department together in a team and provides them with a tangible framework to make their department more sustainable. The programme runs each academic year.
