Intellectual and professional development

Our students have many opportunities to engage with our wider research environment and communicate their work. Many of our departments, schools and centres run their own postgraduate journals (print and online) and working papers. All offer doctoral research seminars and conferences and encourage you to present at such events, as well as taking a lead in managing, facilitating, promoting and chairing them. Our PhD students can apply for our University funds to assist them to present papers at national and international conferences.

Research training (Proficio)

We want our research students to leave Essex with as broad a range of experience as possible, so we give all of our research students the funds to access a variety of courses as part of our innovative research training scheme Proficio. These courses cover everything from languages and IT to research skills and public engagement, so that you develop skills that you can use in academia and industry. This allows you to network with other doctoral students.
