Numeracy assessment and modules

If you're a student in one of the following departments at our Colchester Campus and don't have A-level or AS-level Mathematics then you'll have to take our online numeracy assessment in your first week:

  • School of Life Sciences
  • School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering
  • Department of Economics
  • Essex Business School
  • Department of Psychology

Assessment Arrangements

Your department will contact you if you must take the assessment to let you know when and where you'll take it. It will be in one of our computer labs.

The assessment lasts 30 minutes. Calculators are permitted and will be required for some questions.

Your result

This is a diagnostic assessment rather than a pass/fail test. The result helps us to identify the form of support that will benefit you the most. You'll be registered on a module if your results suggest it would help you.

Modules

You'll be registered on an appropriate module depending on the results of your the diagnostic assessment. The purpose of these modules is to prepare you for the mathematical and statistical material that will form part of your degree and are not formally assessed.
