Asking for information about us

Students, staff and the wider public have a right to ask for information about our University under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR).

Finding information

There is lots of information about us in our publication schemespublication schemespublication schemes and on other parts of our website.

If you can't find the information you are looking for you can send a request to foi@essex.ac.uk. Don't forget to include your name, the information you require, and where you would like the information to be sent. You can phone in your request if it is under EIR, and you can use social media, but it helps us to identify and respond most speedily if you use our FOI email address.

You can’t ask to see information about you under FOIA or EIR – you have to use the Data Protection Act, but don’t worry, because if you get it wrong we’ll work out which Act your request falls under and will let you know.

You can’t ask for personal information about other people under FOIA or EIR, although you may be able to make a request under the Data Protection Act on their behalf.

What will it cost?

There is no charge for any information on our website, of for anything you request that we are able to send to you electronically.

If you would like us to send printed copies of the information you require do let us know. We won't normally charge unless you ask for multiple copies or a very large amount of information. The charges will be to cover the cost of printing and postage. If we think that we may need to charge you then we'll let you know before we print anything.

Replying to you

We will always acknowledge your request. We may ask some extra questions to help us understand what information you are looking for. We have 20 working days in which to respond to your request. We will normally contact you by email, unless you ask us to contact you by another method. We do not normally charge a fee for this service.

Both the FOI and EIR have "exemptions" or "exceptions" – circumstances under which we can legitimately refuse to give you some or all of the information you have requested. When we do this we will always explain our reasons for refusing, and you always have a right to ask us to review our decision.

How to complain

If you are not happy with the response you receive from us you should ask our Registrar and Secretary to review your case. If you are still not happy you then have a right of complaint to the Office of the Information Commissioner.
