FAQs for new School of Language, Literature, and Media

What's happening to my department?

The Departments of Language and Linguistics and Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies are merging to form the new School of Language, Literature, and Media.

Why are the departments merging?

The merger is part of the process of structural change currently taking place at the university. Both departments agreed that joining together will strengthen teaching, research, and the overall student experience. The aim is to create a more connected and supportive academic community which builds on the strengths of each department.

What will the new school be called?

The School of Language, Literature, and Media (SLLaM). This reflects the shared focus on language, culture, creativity, and communication.

How will this affect my course?

Your course will continue as normal. The merger is being carefully planned so your studies remain supported and uninterrupted.

Who is managing the changes?

A Task and Finish Group—made up of staff, faculty representatives, and student leaders—is guiding the process to make sure the transition is smooth and well organised.

When will the change happen?

The existing departments will close on 31 July 2026 and the new School will open on 1 August 2026. Work will continue through 2026–27 to fully align systems and structures.

Will there be support during the transition?

Yes. Students will be kept informed and supported throughout the merger and we’re taking time to align our systems. You will be able to complete your course and graduate as expected.

Where can I get updates?

More information will be shared as plans progress, especially as we approach the next academic year. Please speak to your department if you have any specific questions.
