Staff PC backup and restore tool

We provide a tool that staff can use themselves to backup and restore data and settings when their computer is due to be replaced or upgraded.

Running the tool

You can only run the tool if your computer is connected to the University's wired network.

  1. Click Start and in the search box enter \\sernt2\local\EssexPC and select the folder from the search results.
  2. Double-click either BackupPC.exe, or BackupPC-Southend.exe if you're at Southend Campus.

Backup your data

  1. Select Backup.
  2. Choose what you would like to backup. You do not need to backup files on shared or network drives, for example any drives that show in Windows Explorer with a title such as "local on 'sernt2' (L:)".
  3. For Where do you want to backup your data to? select the recommended secure network share.
  4. When you're ready, choose Start Backup.
  5. The process may take some time depending on how much you are backing up and the age of your computer. You will get a notification box when the process is complete.

Restore your data

  1. When you receive your new or upgraded computer, run the tool again or click the link in the confirmation email you received (if ticked/requested during the backup selection).
  2. Choose Restore.
  3. You will be prompted to first run Word and Outlook, which ensures that the restore process works correctly.
  4. Enter the S number of your old computer – you can find this in the confirmation email you received after completing the initial backup (if ticked/requested during the backup selection).
  5. Choose the location you backed up to from the drop down list and then choose Restore Data.
  6. Your data will then be restored, again this may take some time. You will get a notification box when the process is complete.
