Essex Rebels


Our vision is to grow our Essex Rebels family to enhance lives and become the UK's leading basketball programme.

After competing in the Women’s National Basketball League as the Essex Blades, the Essex Rebels started life after their promotion to the professional ranks of the WBBL in the 2018-19 season.

Tom Sadler has been coaching the team since November 2018 and is now in a permanent position of Head of Basketball Performance for the University.

Women's team

The Essex Rebels compete in the WBBL Championship, WBBL Trophy and WBBL Cup.  The season runs from the end of September to April, with the final games culminating in a play-off final at the O2 Arena, London.

Men's team

Division 2

After a successful season in Division 3, finishing with a 10-6 record and reaching the semi-final of the play-offs, the Essex Rebels are looking to progress further as they compete in Division 2 for the first time.  The side will predominantly consist of Performance Sport students from the University of Essex, and lead by Assistant Basketball Coach, Ross Norfolk.

Division 3

Competing in Division 3 this season will be a new team formed at the University of Essex and VI6 Academy, offering a competitive outlet for young aspiring players to develop their skills.

Easter holidays basketball camps

During the Easter holidays, the Essex Rebels will be running two day camps for all aspiring basketball stars in the state-of-the-art Essex Sport Arena.

Children will learn the fundamentals of basketball, such as dribbling, shooting techniques and passing drills.

You will have the chance to meet some of the professional players as well as win prizes and tickets to the Rebels games!

  • Monday 6 April (9 - 14 years) and Tuesday 7 April (6 - 8 years)
  • 9am - 4pm
  • Ages 9 to 14 years

How to book


Bookings for half-term camps can be made online

Before commencing the online booking process, please ensure you have the correct email address and PIN number for your child.  If you don’t have this number to hand, please contact us on 01206 873250 or email scadmin@essex.ac.uk

  1. Log in to our online booking system using the details provided for your child.
  2. Select 'Make a booking' then 'Sports Camps'.
  3. Select the required option from the list, such as, Basketball Camp.
  4. You can add multiple bookings to your basket and proceed with payment when ready.
  5. You can view your bookings via the ‘Manage Bookings’ tab at the top of the page.

Sports Centre Reception

Parents can also book via the Sports Centre reception by either visiting or telephoning on 01206 873250, and paying using a debit or credit card. Parents will also need to complete an application and consent form (.pdf) and return to reception.

Essex Rebels Junior

Essex Rebels Juniors

Basketball has had a presence in Colchester for over 50 years, with a Junior National League running for the last 20.

In September 2017, a new era for basketball launched in Colchester as the club was taken over by a management committee focused on increasing participation and competition, primarily for boys, along with developing an identity for greater community engagement.

One year later, Colchester Basketball created a partnership with the University of Essex, establishing the Essex Rebels Junior Basketball Club, to offer:

  • U12 community session for boys and girls
  • U14 boys community session
  • U16 girls community session
  • U14 Junior National League team
  • Two U16 Junior National League teams
  • U18 Junior National League team
  • U19 Basketball Academy

How to join

The Essex Rebels Junior Club is committed to:

  • Offering coaching, playing, and officiating opportunities in basketball at a high level
  • Promoting the club within the local community and within the sport of basketball in England
  • Ensuring a Duty of Care to all members of the club

Essex Rebels Academy

Essex Rebels Academy

The Essex Rebels Basketball Academy works in partnership with the VI6 and Sigma Schools Trust to deliver a programme aimed at athletes looking to pursue a dual career pathway combining academic study with basketball in an elite environment.

The programme provides challenging, competitive opportunities through the Academy Basketball League (ABL) and links with the Essex Rebels Junior Basketball club, who compete in the National League.

Player development is at the heart of the programme. The Academy provides a comprehensive package of technical, tactical, physical, and psychological development, to assist each player on their path to a becoming dual career student athlete.
