This Health and Care Professions Council accredited module is for registered professionals who wish to prescribe as both an independent prescriber and a supplementary prescriber working in partnership with an Independent Prescriber and the patient. It is relevant to all healthcare settings where podiatrists/physiotherapists/radiographers/paramedics act as independent and supplementary prescribers.

The module is designed to ensure that you become a competent and confident prescriber by developing your knowledge on pharmacology, prescribing competencies, relevant legal frameworks and through the improvement and updating of relevant skills such as consultation and assessment.  

Through successfully completing this module you will be able to enhance patient care by providing quicker and more efficient access to healthcare and make the very best use of your own skills. 

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module you will be able to:
1.  Undertake assessment and consultation with patients and carers, encompassing a thorough history (including medication, over the counter treatments and complementary therapies) to inform diagnosis.
2.  Prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively, demonstrating an awareness of the influences on prescribing practice, and the roles and relationships of others involved in prescribing, supplying and administering medication.
3.  Introduce measures to monitor the effects of prescribed medication demonstrating knowledge of drug actions
4.  Work effectively within the legislative framework relevant to the practice of non-medical prescribing.
5.  Access and utilise local and national sources of information, advice and support in prescribing practice.
6.  Work with patients and carers to enhance their coping strategies.
7.  Practise within a framework of professional accountability and responsibility in relation to non-medical prescribing.
8.  Promote partnership and patient involvement in their own care through effective communication.
9.  Develop a clinical management plan within legislative requirements.

Accreditation and professional recognition

On successful completion of the course students will be entitled to register with the HCPC as an independent non-medical prescriber.  Please note the HCPC request a one-off fee for this.

Our expert staff

Experts within various specialist fields support sessions throughout the timetable.  This includes a pharmacist who delivers the pharmacology content.  We also have expert lecturers within our own team who contribute on key subject matters.

Entry Requirements

1. A physiotherapist or podiatrist whose name is held on the relevant part of the HCPC membership register. 2. Professionally practising in an environment where there is an identified need for the individual to use Independent/Supplementary prescribing regularly. 3. Have support from the employer/sponsor, including confirmation that the entrant will have appropriate supervised practice in the clinical area in which they are expected to prescribe. 4. Demonstrate medicines and clinical governance arrangements are in place to support safe and effective Independent/Supplementary prescribing. 5. Identify an approved medical practitioner, normally recognised by the employer/commissioning organisation as having: i. Experience in the relevant field of practice. ii. Training and experience in the supervision, support and assessment of trainees. iii. Agreed to provide the student with opportunities to develop competencies in prescribing; and to supervise, support and assess the student during his/her clinical placement. 6. Have at least three years relevant post-qualification experience in the clinical area where prescribing will take place. 7. Be working at an advanced practitioner or equivalent level. 8. Be able to demonstrate reflection on his/her own performance and take responsibility for his/her own continuing professional development. 9. Provide evidence of a DBS check within the last 3 months. 10. Demonstrate the ability to study at a minimum of academic level 6 or 7.

Structure

Module Outline

The programme will run over a period of six months, during which there will be 28 days of both contact time and self-directed learning in order for the theory component to be delivered. The module will cover all of the areas that would be expected of a safe and effective prescriber:  knowledge of anatomy and physiology  consultation and assessment  pharmacology  psycho-social aspects of prescribing  effective medicines management  legal and ethical issues  special groups  health promotion Between study days, you will be expected to shadow your prescribing designated medical practitioner for an equivalent of half a day per week (12 days) of educationally-led practice.

Assessment strategy

In complying with HCPC requirements, assessment will comprise successful completion of:  Portfolio: a 5000 client-specific reflective analysis in the form of 2 case studies (one of which should illustrate independent prescribing, and the other should be of supplementary prescribing). This assessment has a 40% pass mark at level 6 (or 50% at M level), and forms 80% of the marks.  One 90 minute written final examination based upon pharmacology, consisting of 10 multiple-choice questions and 10 short answer questions. This assessment has an 80% pass mark, and forms 20% of the total marks for the module.  One 30 minute drug calculation examination, consisting of five multiple choice questions. This assessment is marked as “pass” or “fail”, but the student must answer all questions correctly.  Completion of the logbook with the designated medical mentor to assess practice-based competency. This assessment is marked as “pass” or “fail”.
