Hong Kong Academic Excellence Scholarship

All departments (excluding East 15)

If you're starting at Essex in 2021-22 and achieve academic excellence in your pre-University qualification, we will offer you a scholarship of £3,000 for your first year.


You must meet all of the following conditions:

  • be ordinarily resident in the country specified
  • be classified as international students for fees purposes
  • have received an offer of admission for entry to the University of Essex for 2021-2022
  • register for a full-time undergraduate degree* at the University of Essex with first enrolment in 2021-22
  • be in the first year of your degree course in 2021-2022
  • have obtained AAB or above in A-levels (or equivalent)
  • for 2021-2022 entry: students must make Essex your firm choice on UCAS by 19 July 2021

*Courses leading to the award of a Diploma of Higher Education, Foundation Degree, Bachelors Degree, Integrated Masters (four years)

Students who aren't eligible

You are not eligible for this award, even if you meet the criteria above, if you:

  • are on a Higher/Degree Apprenticeship course
  • are on any East 15 Acting School courses
  • are a University of Essex International College (UEIC) Pathway student
  • are fully or partly sponsored
  • are transferring into the second year from another UK higher education institution
  • are directly continuing from one course to another (for example, from foundation degree or HND on to the final year of an honours degree)

How to apply

If you achieve the necessary grades and meet all other eligibility criteria you will be notified from August onwards. You do not need to complete an application form.
