Profile

Biography

Aline Villavicencio is a Lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, University of Essex (UK). During her career she has been a Reader at the Institute of Informatics, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), a Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy in 2014/2015 and in the Laboratory of Information and Decision Systems in 2011/2012, a Visiting Scholar at the Laboratoire LaTTiCe at the École Normale Supérieure (France) in 2014, an Erasmus-Mundus Visting Scholar at Saarland University (Germany) in 2012/2013 and a Visiting Scholar at the Computer Science Department, University of Bath (UK) from 2006-2009. Prior to these she worked as a Senior Researcher in the Department of Language and Linguistics of the University of Essex (2004-2005) and in the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge (2001-2004). She is a member of the Language and Computation Group at Essex. and of the Neurocomputational and Language Processing Laboratory at UFRGS and received a CNPq Fellowship from 2009. Her PhD is in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge (Computer Laboratory, Hughes Hall) in 2003 with a thesis entitled The Acquisition of a Unification-Based Generalised Categorial Grammar, supervised by Ted Briscoe. Her research interests are in lexical semantics, multilinguality, and cognitively motivated NLP. This work includes techniques for Multiword Expression treatment using statistical methods and distributional semantic models, and applications like Text Simplification and Question Answering, for languages like English and Portuguese.
