Computer vision for marine animal behaviour analysis
Underwater photogrammetry and 3D object detection and tracking for analysis of marine animal behaviour and interactions. Initial focus on developing inexpensive high-speed video synchronisation and camera position estimation tools.
PhD thesis (2017): "Honeybee visual cognition: a miniature brain’s simple solutions to complex problems." In recent decades we have seen a string of remarkable discoveries detailing the impressive cognitive abilities of bees (social learning, concept learning and even counting). But should these discoveries be regarded as spectacular just because bees manage to achieve human-like computations of visual image analysis and reasoning? In my PhD thesis I offered a radically different explanation.
