Professor Gabriel Pearson

Emeritus Professor
Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies
Professor Gabriel Pearson

Gabriel Pearson has been a professor in the Literature Department for over thirty years. His main areas of publication have been in nineteenth century fiction and poetry (Dickens; Matthew Arnold; Henry James) and modern English and American poetry (where he has written extensively on writers such as T. S. Eliot; Robert Lowell: John Berryman; Geoffrey Hill). He was for a long time a regular reviewer for The Guardian, The Spectator and The New Statesman. His teaching, however, has mainly concentrated on medieval and renaissance literature with a strong emphasis on Elizabethan and Jacobean drama. He distributes his interest equally between text and performance. He joined the Centre for Theatre Studies in 1997 for the inception of the MA in Contemporary Shakespearean Theatre and played a major role in shaping its contents. He retains an undiminished appetite for theatre in all its forms and varieties.
