Profile
Biography
I qualified as a Mental Health Nurse in 1983 and retain an active interest in the education and professional development of my profession. Whilst I have worked in a range of fields, my particular clinical interest remains in working with people with on-going experiences of mental illness. With the stresses and strains of working in contemporary mental health environments nurses need to remain aware of their critical role in ‘being with’ people during period of health and illness. At the University of Essex I have worked with pre-registration health and social care students. In 2013 I developed an innovative pre-registration work based learning curriculum working with a local NHS Trust and the Nursing & Midwifery Council. I am currently leader of a first year module on compassionate care in mental health nursing; this module addresses the core principles and practice of mental health nursing with new students. I designed and have led the Professional Doctorates in Health & Social Care this programme at the University of Essex since 2001. On inception the programme was original and I continue to evolve the programme to meet the changing demands of students and employers. The programme recruits students primarily from the east of England working in health, social care and education environments. In addition to the above: • I lead and teach on modules at undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels across the School. My teaching relates to specialist areas of interest: • Mental health theory & practice (particularly recovery) • Research theory and practice • Reflective practice as a strategy for continuous professional development • Nursing theory & practice • Organisation development & change • I support the School educational endeavour in the role of Director of Education • I provide supervision to a range of PhD students, traditional and professional doctorate routes.
