Dr Vivek Bhatt



Dr Vivek Bhatt is a researcher and teacher of human rights, international law, and politics, recently appointed as Postdoctoral Research Associate for the AHRC-funded project, 'Ensuring Respect for Human Rights in Locked-Down Care Homes', at the Essex Autonomy Project. Vivek's research focuses on the human rights dimensions of COVID-related decision-making in UK care homes and intensive care, with particular emphasis upon the right to life and the prohibition of discrimination. Vivek is concurrently conducting research into the human rights dimensions of HIV prevention, international enforcement of social and economic rights (with Associate Professor Jacqueline Mowbray, University of Sydney), and the politicisation of international law within global and domestic policy-making processes. Vivek was awarded a PhD in Law at University of Edinburgh in 2020, where he was the recipient of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Science research studentship. He additionally holds an MSc in Political theory from the LSE and a Master of International Law from the University of Sydney. Vivek has four years' experience as a university teacher of human rights, public international law, and international relations at the University of Strathclyde and the University of Edinburgh, and achieved an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2020. Vivek has authored a number of recent and forthcoming publications in his field, including a chapter in 'Human Rights in Times of Transition: Liberal Democracies and Challenges of National Security', which was published by Edward Elgar in November 2020.

Human Rights in Care Homes

Postdoctoral Research Associate for an AHRC-funded research project aiming to improve respect for human rights in UK care homes, using the impact of COVID-19 as a case study. The research is housed at the Essex Autonomy project and led by Professor Wayne Martin and Professor Sabine Michalowski.
