Sigmund Freud's notion of masochism
Psychoanalytic research into adult consensual BDSM activities aimed to demonstrate that sexual masochism was a search for a primitive form of containment as exemplified by Bion (1962).
Freud had addressed sexual masochism in his work. In 1924 he wrote his last paper on masochism ‘The Economic Problem of Masochism’. This paper was in the wake of the 1920 paper ‘Beyond the Pleasure Principle’ and the introduction there of the Death Instinct. This in turn had been
