Biography
Birsha Ohdedar joined the School of Law at Essex in September 2019. His current work focuses on environmental and climate justice, natural resources (particularly water), human rights, climate change litigation, and political ecology. He works on these issues at both the international and domestic level (with a regional focus on India). Birsha received his PhD from SOAS, University of London in 2020, completing his thesis on the topic of the human right to water in the context of climate change with a case study on India. Birsha is a member of the editorial board of the Law, Environment and Development Journal (LEAD Journal) a peer reviewed academic journal based in New Delhi and London. He is affiliated as a Research Associate with the International Environmental Law Centre (IELRC). Birsha previously taught at SOAS, University of London. Birsha studied law at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and SOAS, University of London. Prior to entering academia, Birsha worked for several years as a lawyer. He began his career working in the public and regulatory law department of a large law firm in New Zealand, before working with human rights lawyers’ collectives and NGOs in Bangalore, India on land rights and labour issues. Between 2014 and 2018 he worked in two law firms in London, advising on renewable energy and climate change law. During this time, he also participated regularly at UN climate change negotiations, providing legal advice to climate vulnerable developing countries through his work with Legal Response International.
