Profile

Biography

I am Professor of Health Services Research (HSR) in the School of Health and Social Care at the University of Essex. My doctoral training in HSR was undertaken at the University of York and was supported by a 4-year HSR research training fellowship jointly funded by the Medical Research Council and the NHS. Subsequently, my post-doctoral training at the Universities of of Dundee and Edinburgh was supported by an NIHR post-doctoral fellowship awarded by the Chief Scientist Office in Scotland. I have worked as a health services researcher in NHS Scotland and NHS England and, before joining the University of Essex, held the post of Reader in Health Services Research in the School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews in Fife. I draw on my extensive portfolio of applied health research designs and methods to evaluate healthcare interventions and teach a variety of HSR methods to undergraduate and post graduate students and health and care professionals. I have expertise in evidence syntheses; randomised controlled trials, cohort and interrupted time-series studies; surveys employing qualitative and questionnaire approaches and have produced economic evaluations and modelling frameworks with research collaborators. My research always includes members of the public, their perspectives and values, and adheres to the standards outlined in the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research.
