Profile

Biography

Louise is an Associate Director at the UK Data Archive and is Service Director of Collections Development and Data Publishing. The Collections Development team work to ensure that the most useful data are acquired and made available via the Service. The data publishing teams work closely with data producers to ensure that high quality data of interest to social scientists are created, managed and received by the Service; through advocacy, training and using methods and protocols for publishing FAIR data. Her current research activities are focused around standards and technologies for reviewing, curating, archiving and presenting digital social science data, particularly using open source infrastructures and tools. She contributes to the Cohorts and Longitudinal Resources (CLOSER) project on the leadership team and oversees qualitative data activities at the UK Data Service and regularly advises internationally in this area. She is currently PI on an ESRC project to create an open source configurable quality assessment tool for numeric data, QAMyData, and was recently PI on a joint with South Africa working with DataFirst at Cape Town University looking at enabling large scale data infrastructure for policy and planning. Louise had led a number of research awards, supported by the ESRC and Jisc, and publishes and edits regularly on a wide range of issues relating to the archiving, sharing and reuse of data, and on infrastructures for sharing qualitative data. She acts as consultant for new qualitative data archives setting up around the world. Before joining the Archive in 2000, Louise was Deputy Director of Qualidata, the world first national qualitative data archive, from 1994. She has taught sociology, social research methods and statistics, and spent six years working on the design, implementation and analysis of the British Household Panel Study at Essex.

QA My Data

The QAMyData project focusses on identifying some of the most common problems and errors found in numeric files and associated metadata, with a view to building a tool to help detect these. The project is funded under the NCRM Collaborative projects. Many of the routine checks undertaken by data publishers or users typically use fairly manual processes, which can be extremely-time consuming for large files with thousands of variables. In consultation with the data curation and publishing community and users, the project identified the following key issues in numeric data files that included: the level of missing data, duplication, outliers and direct identifiers. A open-source tool, available in GitHub, has been developed and tested and refined through user engagement and training.
