Biography

Before coming to Essex, I completed by BA in Sociology at the University of York, and following the completion of my PGCE, I completed my MA in Political Philosophy at same university. I then taught Sociology, Politics, and History for four years in post-16 education at the Sheffield College. Currently, I am PhD reviewer for the Essex Student Research Online (ESTRO) journal. Outside of academia I enjoy playing music (particularly the violin and guitar), going for long walks in the countryside, and the culture (and practice) of tattooing. CHASE funded

Thesis

The Problem of Evil in the Ethics of Kant, L√łgstrup, and Levinas

If we are to understand evil as a phenomenon of the human condition, how are we to make sense of the good as a part of, and within, our ethical lives? Indeed, if we accept that evil is, in some way, a part of the ethical self, what hope can we have that such an evil may be overcome? In attending to these questions, my thesis will examine the theories of evil expounded upon in the ethics of Kant, Løgstrup, and Levinas, and their attempts to articulate, and formulate, the ethical subject
