One of Hong Kong’s most successful business leaders has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Essex.

Patrick Lam, who graduated from Essex with a degree in Accounting, Finance and Economics in 1986, returned to the Colchester Campus to receive the award in recognition of his success in the service industry and commitment to transformative education.

As Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice Chairman of FSE Lifestyle Services, Patrick leads a major services conglomerate whose activities span environmental engineering, facilities management, property services and insurance consultancy.

In his short tenure of ten years, he has grown the company from a few thousand staff to over 25,000 serving over a million people daily in Hong Kong, Macao and other cities in China.

Patrick’s influence stems way beyond Hong Kong. In 2021, the French Government appointed him a Chevalier of the Order of National Merit in recognition of his efforts to strengthen trade and cultural relations between Hong Kong and France.

And his commitment to Essex has been demonstrated through his work as the founding member of the Hong Kong Task Force, which has brought together fellow alumni to support scholarships for students from Hong Kong.

Speaking at graduation, orator and Dean of Essex Business School, Professor Claudia Girardone, said of Patrick: “His vision, generosity and leadership have helped create a lasting legacy that will strengthen the relationship between Essex and Hong Kong for many years to come.

“Through his support of scholarships, hardship support and student initiatives, Patrick has demonstrated a profound commitment to transforming lives through education.

“Those who know Patrick speak not only of his accomplishments, but of his modesty, kindness and generosity. He is a leader who understands that true success is not measured solely by personal achievement, but how we conduct ourselves and by the opportunities we create for others.

“Patrick's story reminds us that education is not simply a pathway to career success; it is an invitation to contribute, to lead responsibly, and to remain connected to the communities that helped us grow.”

In his speech after receiving his honorary degree, Patrick encouraged graduating students to be brave and adventurous as they begin a new chapter in their lives.

He said: “This honorary degree is not the end of my journey. It is a beautiful milestone that reminds me of that first step I took years ago when I said yes to my friend’s casual introduction.

“It reminds me that leaving the familiar was the best decision I ever made and success was built on the trust of the incredible people who let me into their circle.

“I thank my family for their unfailing support and love. My wife and daughters are with me today, your presence meant a lot to me.

“My father, who is 95, visited the Colchester campus 45 years ago all the way from Hong Kong. Travel was not as common those days.

“He suggested that Essex University was an excellent choice.

“Dad was absolutely correct and I am forever grateful for what he has done.”
