Spring Graduation 2023

Spring Graduation 2023 gives us the chance to celebrate graduates who were not able to attend their planned graduation ceremony due to the disruption caused by COVID-19 or who completed their course between July 2022 and December 2022.

This is a special generation of students who had to rise to unique challenges and have inspired us all with their Essex Spirit.

 We will be adding stories to this page throughout Spring Graduation week.

Class of Spring 2023: Lily Davis
Lily Davis went from being an indecisive participant at an Essex undergraduate open day to becoming one of the most active members of the Department of History and now she is graduating with an MA History.
Class of Spring 2023: Camila Pardo
Biological sciences and creative writing don’t necessarily go hand-in-hand, but for Camila Pardo, her dream of bringing these two together became a reality when she studied for her Masters degree at Essex.
Class of Spring 2023: Emily Linney
Emily chose to pursue a career in physiotherapy as she wanted the opportunity to enhance people’s lives by providing them not only with care but with scientifically proven interventions, which “the physiotherapy profession strives to do.”
Spring Graduate 23: Joshua Fullard
Joshua Fullard has gone from an undergraduate politics student to an assistant professor of behavioural science in just ten years. Graduating with a PhD in Economics, he said the decision to come to Essex was the best one he could have ever made.
Class of Spring 2023: Sebastian Schraag
Sebastian Schraag thought engineering was his passion until he got a part-time job in a restaurant and now he’s landed his dream job at a top hotel.
Class of Spring 2023: Claire Bate
Claire Bate completed her Masters in Psychology at Essex while unexpectedly home-schooling her two young children and dealing with the pressures of lockdown.
Class of Spring 2023: Esther Omoare Bamuyi
Esther Omoare-Bamuyi wanted to study Social Work to help advocate for others who need support and to help them fulfil their potential. She put this into practice during her time at Essex – not only by excelling in her study and work placements, but also by getting fully involved in opportunities to provide fellow students with a voice.
Class of Spring 2023: Merry Mushka
Merry Mushka will graduate with a BSc in Occupational Therapy and hopes to take what they have learnt at the University of Essex into improving healthcare for trans communities, as well as educating future generations of healthcare students.
Class of Spring 2023: Michael Sewell and Lewis Smith
Studying under the shadow of COVID-19 led History PhD graduates Michael Sewell and Lewis Smith to launch History Indoors at the start of the pandemic – offering online interactive talks for everyone.
Class of Spring 2023: Natalie Howard
Natalie Howard was initially unsure about what her career path but then she fell in love with events. Now she is graduating with a degree in Events Management with Hospitality and has secured a job at top hotel Milsoms as an Event Manager.
Class of Spring 2023: Rachel Bown
Rachel started studying for her BA and MA at Essex while still working, but after retiring after 25 years in the Metropolitan Police in February 2023 Rachel has decided to continue her studies to the next level.
Class of Spring 2023: Kate Beckwith
For Kate Beckwith, studying for the Masters in Psychodynamic Counselling at Essex was life-changing. Not only did she learn more about herself than she ever could have imagined, but the skills and experience she gained gave her the confidence to set up her own successful therapeutic practice, which is one of its kind.
