Join the Centre for Intimate and Sexual Citizenship for an insightful online webinar symposium on the topic of 'Queering Desire: Lesbians, Gender and Subjectivity'.

The symposium will explore contemporary configurations of lesbian, bi, queer women’s and non-binary people’s experiences of identity and desire. Topics to be addressed include butch/femme identities, visual representation, community and connection, digital intimacy and queer culture in the aftermath of same sex marriage.

The presentations address contemporary manifestations of established lesbian identities such as butch, femme, stud and stone, as well historical studies of queer gendered and sexual heritages. Within queer theory, explorations of desire, longing and eroticism have often neglected female and non-binary people’s experiences, particularly in terms of how they intersect with gendered and sexual identities. The experiences of queer people who are assigned female at birth (AFAB) tend to be relatively neglected within wider literatures on social history, sexual citizenship and intimate relationships in relation to their perspectives on identity and desire.

It is striking that queer identities may change and evolve over time, both within an individual’s personal history, as well as across generations. The symposium explores some of these shifts, arguing that while gender and sexuality are fluid and socially constructed, they nonetheless produce meaningful identity and social configurations that are important to explore in an academic context. The symposium brings together analyses of contemporary queer contextualised intersubjectivities as well as historical studies of queer gendered and sexual heritages.
