Promoting and celebrating equality at Essex

Our School is a dynamic community of Philosophers and Art Historians working at all levels in teaching and research. We are committed to promoting a positive and inclusive environment for all of our colleagues.

The Athena Swan Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise the commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.

The University of Essex was awarded the Athena Swan Institutional Bronze Award in November 2013.

In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in other disciplines, including Philosophy, Art History and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Our application

The School of Philosophy and Art History started its internal Athena Swan process in 2018 in order to systematically review and address issues of gender equality more broadly. The School will submit an application for a Bronze Department Award in November 2019.
