Essex Modern Language Certificates (EMLC) give members of the public, students and staff working at our University the opportunity to learn a language.
You're taught part-time by native or bilingual speakers, and can gain a qualification in a highly regarded academic environment.
Whether you're a complete beginner or have studied a language before, we'll find the best level to suit you, with modules ranging from Initial to Mastery level.
We offer a wide choice of 30 credit modules in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese.
Our Initial Intensive double module is available in Spanish and is worth 60 credits (two 30-credit modules).
Our intensive single modules in French, German and Italian have two 15 credit modules which must be taken together to form a 30 credit module. On completion, you reach the same language level as the double module.
We also offer a Spanish, Italian or Romanian to Portuguese conversion course, if you can already speak one of these languages and would like to learn Portuguese.
You learn a range of skills that will help you deal with different situations when travelling or working around the world.
We help you develop your written and spoken language through presentations, role plays and portfolios and you also have access to extensive online language facilities.
You can choose to study a single or double module, or you can accumulate the credits towards a recognised qualification in modern languages:
