Introducing our Centre for Social Work and Social Justice

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela

The Centre for Social Work and Social Justice (CfSWSJ) strives to be a trailblazer for social work education in the UK.  Our main aims are:

  • the formation of a distinct academic profile, placing an emphasis on social justice and human rights informed approaches to social work and the welfare state.
  • fostering of an outstanding educational experience combined with the development of regional, national and international collaborations.
  • the development of innovative, inter-disciplinary and internationally recognised research.

We take a global perspective when learning about, and responding to, some of the most urgent challenges that individuals, families and societies face in a rapidly changing world.  This means comparing and contrasting social work practice around the world, learning about the impact of social, economic and political issues globally, and providing our students with opportunities to experience placements abroad.  We work with a range of partners to ensure we're responsive to global social issues.

The complexities of social problems that social workers deal with require excellent education, innovative research and a strong commitment to issues of social justice.   We are committed to providing an outstanding educational experience for all of our undergraduate and postgraduate students, and aspire to be centrally involved in conducting innovative research and influencing social work agendas nationally and internationally. Find out more about our portfolio of courses.

Our research priorities are:

  • political economy of social and health care
  • citizen participation in social work and social welfare.
  • critical interface between Social Work and Human Rights
  • conceptualisations of critical and radical social work and social policy
  • international and comparative social work.
