Improve your English before your course

Our pre-sessional English language pathways are ideal if you need to improve your English before starting one of our courses.

We offer various pre-sessional programmes based on your needs and English proficiency. If you have a conditional offer to study with us, we have three pathways that will enable you to meet our English language entry requirements without the need to retake your English test – PALSS, PEL and subject-specific programmes. You can use our pre-sessional finder below to see the options available for you.

If you have an unconditional offer, but would like to take an extra course before starting your studies, you may be interested in our Essex Academic Skills Programme. This is a four week course that introduces you to study skills commonly used at UK universities and will help you become familiar with Essex and our academic culture.

If you plan to join the second year of an undergraduate course and need a pre-sessional pathway, please email for more information on entry requirements.

We require a £250 tuition fee deposit payment for pre-sessional pathways, and will advise you on this if you are offered a place on a pre-sessional pathway.

You can study a pre-sessional pathway before the start of your main course at Essex. The right pathway for you depends on your current IELTS score and the subject you'll be studying afterwards. Our pre-sessional finder tool will show you the options available to you.
