Limbotech

We caught up with director Dave Norton to discuss creative technology company Limbotech. Recently, this motion capture innovator won £45k of funding from the University Enterprise Zone.

What is your business idea?

We have come up with a new way of creating motion capture data, using technology based off virtual reality tracking systems. We have spent two years on research and development, and now we’re exploring all the different applications our system can be used for, across education, training, entertainment, arts galleries and so on. It’s a very exciting phase for our business.

How did you find out about Angels@Essex?

I was sent a link by a colleague of mine. They just saw the words ‘virtual reality’ and thought of me. At that time, I hadn’t considered the idea of getting investment. That was mostly down to lack of knowledge and confidence, but also just not realising how I could make the business attractive to investors. I read through the advert and –I thought, I’ll try that, I’ve got nothing to lose. And now here I am!

How has the Angels@Essex team helped you?

Hugely! In our first meeting together with the team, they said: ‘Do you have a pitch deck to show us?’ And I said, ‘What’s a pitch deck?’ I really was starting off at the ground floor.  The team has been so fantastic guiding me every step of the way–but also not doing it FOR me, which I think was really important. They supported me as much as they could, but they were making me go through the steps myself. That has given me a lifelong confidence to take forward. It’s been absolutely fantastic. Now we’re at the position where we’re receiving investment, which three or four months ago would have seemed impossible.

Have you attended any of our Space to Grow webinars?

Yes, they always seem to come at the right time. There was a webinar on doing your pitch deck while I was doing just that. As someone very new to the world of business, I’ve found them very approachable and easy to understand. I’ve never felt alienated by any concepts that are brought up. There’s a good level of interactivity as well, they really tailor the content to the audience.

What do you see as the benefits of using the University of Essex?

The big thing is, it’s bespoke to you. It’s not just general information they’ve copied off Google. They’re experts with so much experience and so much knowledge. They’ll give you all the support you want, but you still feel you’re in the driving seat, making the decisions. It’s everything a new entrepreneur could need.

Given your experience so far, would you consider using the services again?

Absolutely, if they’ll have me, I’ll be knocking on the door every day asking for more support!

Would you recommend our business services to others?

100%!

What are your future plans?

Next year is looking to be a very busy year. We are launching a new motion capture service to the creative industries. We’re also doing a few months of research and development, looking at how we can apply our technology. And there are a quite few projects that we haven’t had the resources to do up until this point, but now thanks to Angels@Essex, we can. We’re very excited to get started on those.
