In a world where technology evolves quickly, our homes are filling up with forgotten gadgets like, unused chargers, keyboards and headphones. These little items add up to a big problem. Millions of tonnes of small electrical waste end up in landfill each year, despite containing valuable materials like copper, aluminium, gold, and rare earth metals that can be recovered and reused.

Recycling small electricals isn’t just about decluttering; it’s a simple, powerful action that helps conserve resources, reduce carbon emissions, and protect our environment from hazardous waste.

How can you help?

We are setting up 3 boxes across our Colchester campus for students or staff to drop off the below items.

The 3 boxes are located in:

  • SU reception
  • IT reception in Silberrad Student Centre
  • EMS helpdesk

What you can recycle:

  • Cables and leads (USBs, power cables, HDMIs, extension leads)
  • Keyboards and computer mice
  • Wired headphones, earphones, and basic desktop speakers
  • Small accessories without storage (webcams, card readers, basic USB hubs)
  • Simple desk items like calculators

Items we cannot accept:

  • Laptops, phones, and tablets
  • USB sticks, hard drives, and SD cards
  • Vapes, power banks, and loose batteries: These cause fires in standard WEEE bins.
  • Printers or ink/toner cartridges.
  • Kitchen appliances
  • TV’s or computer monitors

Please check our A-Z here for where you can dispose of other items.
