Careers support

Your career is just as important to us as it is to you. If you need some support along the way, we've got you covered. You get free careers support for life and a simple CV review, help with interview preparation or ongoing support, could be all it takes to land you the role you've been after.

Book an appointment through CareerHub with one of our friendly and professional Careers Services Team to utilise the support available to you. Appointments are available in person, by phone or via Zoom.

You can also access CareerHub+ anytime and from any device to search for graduate jobs and internships, create and review a CV, get some interview practice, up-skill yourself, book onto careers events and much more.

Accessing CareerHub and CareerHub+ as a graduate

To access CareerHub, select ‘Graduate’ when prompted and enter your username; this will usually be your old University email address (without the @essex.ac.uk part). Click on ‘Reset your password’ the first time you log in. The password reset link will go to the personal email address you registered on your account as a student. If you don't have access to it, change your email address by emailing careersinfo@essex.ac.uk.

To access CareerHub+, you will first need to create a new, alumni account. Select ‘Alumni’ and ‘Sign up’ when prompted. You can then enter your Student ID (this is the same as your CareerHub username: your old University email address without the @essex.ac.uk), as well as your date of birth.

Contact careersinfo@essex.ac.uk if you need any help getting set up.

Postgraduate discount

If you’re considering further study, then look no further than Essex. With your alumni membership, you could be entitled to a 33% tuition fee discount on the first year of a postgraduate programme.

Library access

Once you have your Essex alumni card, you can use any of our three campuses libraries at Colchester, Southend and Loughton.

  • To finish setting up your library account, please ensure you bring your Alumni card to the library information desk with proof of address and valid photo ID.
  • You’re entitled to borrow five books from the Main Collection at Colchester or Loughton. Books are loaned for a period of at least seven days, renewing automatically for up to one year (subject to availability). More information about automatic renewals is available here
  • Books in the Student Collection at Colchester (on the first floor) are not available to alumni. These are prioritised for current students as they are high-circulation items or featured on course reading lists.
  • There is no access for alumni to Interlibrary loans.
  • Your library card is valid forever but library accounts expire every year to ensure contact details are up-to-date. If your card has expired drop by the library information desk and they’ll reactivate your account for you.

Publish with the Essex Student Journal

If you studied at Essex as an undergraduate or PGT student, you can submit papers for publication up to a year after graduating in the Essex Student Journal. Our multi-disciplinary journal is run by and for students at the University, publishing the hard work of our students and, through a double-blind peer review process, supports you to develop your writing skills and produce high-quality papers.

Publishing a paper in your name builds your academic portfolio and can help further your career. They accept a wide range of submissions including essays, case studies, research papers, dissertations, and academic blog posts. Or, if you're progressing to PGR at the University, you can become a peer reviewer for the Journal, developing vital analytical and feedback skills required for any future career.

If you have any questions, get in touch with the Journal Team.
