Offering our students a 'golden' education

Our dedication to offering our students a transformational education has led to Essex being awarded the highest rating of Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

Our top 20 ranking in the Research Excellence Framework means Essex is part of a very select group of universities that excel at both delivering excellence in education and research.

So what is the Teaching Excellence Framework?

The UK Government introduced the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) to recognise and reward excellent learning and teaching, and ensure that prospective students can make informed choices.

Our Gold rating

The TEF Panel judged the University of Essex delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students and is of the highest quality found in the UK.

Awarding Essex the top Gold rating the TEF Panel praised Essex for ensuring “students from all backgrounds achieve outstanding outcomes with regards to continuation and progression to highly skilled employment or further study, notably exceeding the University’s benchmark”.

The TEF Panel also highlighted that Essex had “outstanding levels of satisfaction with teaching, academic support, and assessment and feedback, markedly exceeding the University’s benchmark”.

Our Gold rating confirms that Essex delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for our students and recognises the close working partnership between our world-leading academic staff, excellent professional services staff and Students' Union, all of whom have contributed to enabling all our students reach their full potential.

Professor Anthony Forster
"We admit students on their potential, not just on their prior achievement, and our staff are absolutely committed to providing a transformational education experience for all our students."
Professor Anthony Forster Vice-chancellor

The link between research and education is a vital part of the University’s mission to ensure students get the maximum benefit from studying at a research-intensive institution.

We're committed to high quality teaching and offering an amazing student experience beyond the lecture theatre, laboratory and seminar room. Our approach is borne out by our consistently strong performance in the National Student Survey (NSS), coming in the top 15 for the sixth year running (2018, overall student satisfaction, English mainstream universities*).
