Birthday honour for Sir Trevor
Trevor Brooking, CBE, an honorary graduate of the
University, has been awarded a Knighthood in the Queen's birthday honours
list.
Sir Trevor spent his footballing career playing for West Ham United.
During his 19 years as a midfielder with the Hammers he played in more
than 500 league matches and won the FA Cup twice, in 1975 and 1980. He was
capped 47 times for England and scored five times for his country.
After retiring as a football player in 1984 Sir Trevor forged a
successful career as a football pundit for the BBC and as a respected
administrator.
Sir Trevor was awarded a University of Essex honorary degree in 2001
for his services to sport and in recognition of his role as Chairman of
Sport England.
He is now Director of Football Development at the Football Association
where he is responsible for developing, promoting and improving football
at the grassroots.
On hearing that he had been awarded a Knighthood, Sir Trevor told
TheFA.com: 'It's a special moment and a great honour.'
He added: 'It's nice for the family and I think it's good for sport in
general…I've always felt strongly about grassroots football and from that
point of view it's great that it's gaining the recognition.'
