Shooting star makes GB team
An Essex graduate has been chosen to represent Great
Britain in an international rifle shooting competition.
Jamie Munnion, who graduated this summer with a BSc in Cell and
Molecular Biology, was selected to join the GB Under 25 shooting team that
will tour Australia in 2005.
Jamie beat off strong competition to join the team during the annual
Imperial Meeting at Bisley which is attended by the world's top shooters.
His shooting skills in different weather conditions, team skills and
general attitude to shooting secured his place in the team.
The tour to Australia will see Jamie and the GB team compete in the
Australia National Championships and take on the Australia team in an
international match. He will have to shoot consistently at various ranges
from 300 to 1000 yards.
Jamie has been shooting since he was 13 when he competed at Smallbore
(0.22) level. His expertise was proved early on when he won the British
Schools Smallbore Rifle Competition and he soon moved up to Fullbore
(7.62mm) target rifle shooting. He has won gold medals in various
competitions, including the 2002 Under 25 match against Canada, and also
represented the English Universities team when they took on Scottish
Universities in 2002. In 2003 he was selected for the GB Under 25 Rifle
team which competed in the World Championships.
Jamie explained: 'When I found out about being selected for the team
for the 2005 tour I was over the moon. I have wanted to tour Australia for
a long time and now I have the chance to prove myself, both individually
and as part of a team. I just hope I can get the time off work!'
The GB team will fly out to Australia in June 2005.
