Sociologist elected Fellow of British Academy
Professor John Scott from the Department of Sociology has been elected
a Fellow of the British Academy.
Professor Scott is one of 48 scholars elected into the
Fellowship for their academic achievements.
Professor Scott joined the University in 1994 having
previously taught at the University of Leicester, Strathclyde University,
and been an Adjunct Professor in the Sosiologisk Institutt at the
University of Bergen. A member of the editorial board of the British
Journal of Sociology, he was, until recently, a co-editor of Sociology
Review and has been Secretary, Treasurer, Chairperson, and President of
the British Sociological Association and is currently an Honorary
Vice-President. Author of the numerous books, Professor Scott's most
recent publication was Social Theory: Central Issues in Sociology
(2006), an overview of historical and contemporary debates.
Robin Jackson, Chief Executive and Secretary of the British Academy,
said: 'Election to Fellowship is the principal way in which the Academy
recognises scholarly excellence. It comes as the culmination of a rigorous
selection process in which each of the Academy's eighteen Sections,
organised by academic discipline, is involved. This year we are pleased to
welcome new Fellows from all of the disciplines represented in the
Academy, displaying a variety of cutting-edge specialisms, from mediaeval
art to game theory, from Islamic history to philosophy of physics, from
ethnomusicology to the economic analysis of law."
An Admissions Ceremony will be held on 25 September. The President of
the Academy, Baroness O’Neill, will welcome the new Fellows and invite
them to add their names to the Academy’s historic Roll, which includes the
signatures of such eminent scholars as Isaiah Berlin, Kenneth Clark, John
Maynard Keynes and Mortimer Wheeler.
