International conference explores morality, ethics and social order
The 9th International Graduate Conference in Philosophy
was held at the University's Wivenhoe Park campus during the summer.
The theme, 'morality, ethics and social order' provided delegates with
the opportunity to contribute from a range of philosophical perspectives.
Areas of graduate focus included morality and law, notions of community,
deconstructed politics, medical ethics and governance.
The opening presentation - on how secular and religious language
responds to moral atrocity - was given by Essex's Professor Peter Dews.
Following this, much of the day was given over to graduate papers, before
the final presentation by Professor Maeve Cooke, from University College,
Dublin, on the relation of imagination to projects of social
transformation.
Amongst those who attended was the University's Chancellor, Lord
Phillips of Sudbury OBE, and a mix of undergraduate and postgraduate
students, including a number from other UK universities.
As in previous years, the event drew speakers from around the world.
Recent conferences have welcomed graduate speakers from a variety of UK
universities as well as institutions in the US, France, Germany, Finland
and Israel. This year, graduate speakers from the UK (Essex, Sussex,
Warwick) the US (Northwestern), Ireland (Dublin), Germany (Freiburg) and
The Netherlands (Tilburg) presented their research.
