Conference to explore Islam
Islam: a moderate religion is the theme of a forthcoming conference
organised by the Islamic Society at the University of Essex. The
conference, the first of its kind organised by the Society, will provide
an ideal opportunity for the University and local community to explore the
true meaning of Islam and for inter-faith discussion.
The Conference inaugural session will be addressed by Vice-Chancellor
of University of Essex Professor Sir Ivor Crewe and Dr Mateen Durrani,
Chair of Multi-Faith Chaplaincy at the University of Essex and Executive
Committee of the Islamic Society.
Key contributors include Professor Tariq Ramadan from the University of
Oxford who will present a talk on terrorism. He will be joined by
Professor Asma Afsaruddin from the University of Notre Dame, who will look
at the concept of moderation in Islam, and Abdul Hakim Murad, Director of
the Centre of Middle Eastern Studies at Cambridge University who will
focus on spirituality, peace and neighbourhood.
The conference has been timed to coincide with Islamic Awareness Week
at the Wivenhoe Park campus. As part of the activities during the week,
there will be an exhibition of Islamic culture and heritage, workshops on
terrorism, Islamic banking, and a multi-faith panel. The Society is also
hoping to raise awareness of Islam amongst local schools and provide an
opportunity for the local community to share their views on Islam during
the Neighbourhood Day.
Islamic Awareness Week takes place from 19-24 February, with the
conference on 21 February. The conference places are limited. For more
