International conference explores
longitudinal surveys
The University’s Institute for Social and Economic
Research (ISER) organised and hosted a conference which attracted over 200
delegates from 26 countries and saw 75 papers presented.
The conference, known as MOLS 2006, was about the methodology of
longitudinal surveys. Longitudinal surveys are scientific studies that
collect data from the same sample of people on multiple occasions over
time. One of the world’s leading longitudinal surveys, the British
Household Panel Survey, has been based at ISER since it was founded in
1989.
MOLS 2006 was organised by Professor Peter Lynn of ISER, a specialist
in survey methods. The aim of the conference was to bring together people
working in this specialist field from around the world to share knowledge
and experiences. Plenary speakers included Professors Don Dillman from
Washington State University, Rod Little from the University of Michigan,
Gad Nathan from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Mark Wooden from
the University of Melbourne. Around 20 of the invited conference papers
will be published as a monograph book edited by Professor Lynn. It is
planned that a number of other papers presented at the conference will
form a special issue of the Journal of Official Statistics.
In addition to the scientific programme, delegates were treated to a
social programme including a civic reception at Colchester Town Hall and a
conference dinner in the Moot Hall. Further details of the conference can
