Psychologist wins University's oldest
sporting competition
The
University's oldest sporting event, the Championships Challenge Cup - or
the Clacton Cup - was held at Clacton Golf Club during June. The golfing
competition saw 30 staff and students, past and present, enter this year.
The Championship
Challenge Cup was presented to the University by members of Clacton Golf
Club around 1964 when the University first opened its doors. It was
intended to stimulate and foster the game of golf among the students and
staff of the University. However, due to the small student and staff
numbers, the first competition was not held until 1968 but has been played
every year since and is the main event in the University's golfing
calendar.
In addition to the
main Cup, the competition now includes a scratch trophy, a trophy for the
best past member and a putting competition, 'The Conqueror of the Yips'.
The event very nearly
did not go ahead due to the rain, thunder and lightening for the first
time in its history. However, in improving conditions a full day's golf
was enjoyed by all. The results were as follows:
- Clacton Cup winner
- Professor Rick Hanley, of the University's Department of Psychology
- Stableford
winner - Steve Scott, Captain of Clacton Golf Club
- Best Gross Score -
Paul Bevens, past member
- Leading past
member - Mark Rumble, past member
- Longest Drive -
Tim Wild, a current student in the Department of Biological Sciences
- Conqueror of the
Yips putting competition - Nikki Bryant, member of staff in the
Students' Union
