In Memoriam: Sir William Vincent John Evans, GCMG MBE, QC, MA BCL

Honorary graduated Sir Vincent Evans, who died on 18 May 2007 aged 91, was a Judge at the European Court of Human Rights.

Sir Vincent became the first Chair of the International Advisory Board of the University's Human Rights Centre when it was launched in 1982. Sir Vincent was a keen supporter of the new Essex Centre, participating in seminars and conferences as well as advising on its programme of teaching and research.

Sir Vincent had a distinguished career in international human rights organisations including as a judge of the European Court of Human Rights and as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee. The Sir Vincent Evans papers which he gifted to the University are held as one of Library’s Special Collections.

In 1986 Sir Vincent was awarded an honorary degree by the University.
