Colchester Campus car parking
The new academic year began with the introduction of
an occasional users car parking permit, so far taken up by more than 60
staff.
Alongside this was a more rigorous enforcement of
existing parking regulations at the Colchester Campus. Jo Leyland,
Transport Policy Coordinator, explains: ‘Cars are now generally being
parked in proper places, drivers are paying the correct fees and problems
of vehicles parking in disabled spaces under the podia are much reduced.’
Income from car parking revenue (excluding clamping
fees) is ringfenced for transport measures and is already funding a number
of improvements.
A new Car Users Group has also been formed to
represent the views of those travelling to campus by car. Organiser Emily
Kean explains: 'A lot of car users were unhappy and so we decided to get
together and see if we could improve the situation. We felt that as an
organised group we may have more influence and be able to really improve
the car parking systems.'
Emily added: 'The University is signed up to a
transport policy which aims to reduce the number of motor vehicles being
brought onto campus which we support, however we recognise the need to
improve facilities for those who are unable to use public transport to get
to work or study.'
The Group is interested in all car parking issues
including security, permits, repairs, signage, clamping, ticket machines,
regulations, access and how the car park revenue is spent. It is currently
drafting a paper for presentation at the next Transport Policy
Sub-Committee meeting in November, which outlines concerns and proposes
suggestions for changes to the car parking systems.
