Sports Centre welcomes GB squad
The University recently hosted the Great Britain's men's
under 20s basketball team and 2012 Olympics development squad. The team
made use of the University's sporting facilities as they prepared for the
under 20s European Championships in July.
The team, who are hoping for success at the London Olympics in five
years time, was set up this year. The first team of
its kind, it has been partly created to help source new basketball talent
for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The University, alongside Colchester Institute,
provided a training session, or ‘camp’ for the players. Mark Lloyd and
Ross Knevett, both lecturers for the Centre for Business and Management at
Colchester Institute, are heavily involved with the group acting as Team
Manager and Sports Therapist and Fitness Coach, respectively.
Mark Lloyd, from Colchester Institute, said: 'Having the team train
in our region is great for our local players. The team are an
inspiration to other young sportsmen. The UK struggles to keep its
basketball talent in the country, as many top young players are
recruited into the American leagues straight after leaving secondary
school. I have high hopes for the new team this year; I hope to see them
play in the London 2012 Olympics.'
The team will be competing in the European Championships in Portugal
next month where they will be up against teams such as Poland, Belgium and
Ireland.
