Volunteering builds bridges
A recent community event aimed at highlighting the
positive relationship between the University and the local community was
held in Wivenhoe.
With the support of the Students' Union, students Michael Strange and
Dimitris Vonofakos recently hosted a 'Train like Wayne' day which saw 15
ten to 14 year olds from Wivenhoe brush up on their football skills.
The team behind the event are now planning a 'Train like Wayne 2' as
well as considering running similar events themed around painting, music
or cooking.
Dimitris explained the principles behind the event: 'The basic
principle is to share our skills with the Wivenhoe community as a way of
bringing the two communities together. There's a lot of football talent at
the University and it is a great way for locals and students to get the
best out of each other.'
The event was just one of a series of community-building events planned
for the autumn term carried out under the initiative of recently-appointed
Community Volunteer Co-ordinator Siobhan O'Sullivan: 'We have a number of
events lined up working with other groups in the community including local
schools, the council and various charities. Upcoming events centre on our
Global Voices project, which involves international students
sharing aspects of their culture with local school pupils, and our
Greenstead Goes Global event held on 18 November.'
