New production at Theatre
The Theatre Arts Society (TAS) will be staging a production of 84
Charing Cross Road at the Lakeside Theatre between 5-7 March.
84 Charing Cross Road tells the true story of a love affair - a
love affair with literature, and more. It recalls the correspondence over
many years between Helene Hanff, a New York writer, and Frank Doel and
colleagues - of central London booksellers Marks and Co. A tale of hope
and inspiration, it also combines a sense of irony and humour, with a
backdrop that varies from the post-war poverty of the 1940s to the advent
of popular culture in the 1960s. The original book, written by Hanff
herself, was adapted for stage and screen - and the brilliant film 84
Charing Cross Road starring Anne Bancroft and Sir Anthony Hopkins was
produced in 1990.
Directed by James Hughes, a regular of the Lakeside Theatre stage, and
starring other TAS regulars Jenny Corder (previously in Aladdin and Bed)
and Sean Carrigan (previously in Below The Belt and Bed), the company will
consist entirely of students. Speaking about the production, Director
James Hughes said: 'This piece is a simple tale of love, ambition and
reflection, and marks a brief return to a more traditional interpretation
of theatre within this year's packed TAS programme. The script for 84
Charing Cross Road is unique in its ability to conjure up a number of
different interpretations, and with a fantastic cast and crew, I am really
looking forward to the performances.'
The show will be performed between 5-7 March, every evening at
7.30pm. Tickets cost £2 for TAS members, £3 for all other students and
£4 for all others (All seats on Wednesday £2) . For further information
and tickets contact arts@essex.ac.uk, or phone 873261, or pop into the
University Gallery on Square 5.
