Staff exchange opportunities agreed

The University recently signed an agreement with Saitama University, Japan, which will make staff exchanges between the two institutions possible.

The lead department at Essex is the Department of Sociology, but exchanges will be possible across a range of departments in the Schools of Social Sciences and Humanities and Comparative Studies.

Professor John Scott, from Sociology, visited Saitama University to represent the University at the official signing ceremony in June at which Professor Tasumi, President of Saitama University, said he welcomed this first exchange agreement with a British university.

Following the signing of the official agreement and an exchange of gifts, a lunch reception was held at which the Saitama representatives expressed their hope that the staff exchange could be followed by a student exchange scheme. There was also much interest in hearing about University audit and assessment, as Japanese universities are beginning to introduce similar measures.

Saitama University was founded in 1949 and has expanded considerably at its new campus in Saitama city. Located a similar distance from Tokyo as Essex is from London, many of its staff travel daily from Tokyo. Visiting staff can normally be accommodated in self-catering flats in the International House, located on the main campus.

Any members of staff interested in making contact with their counterparts at Saitama and potentially visiting the Japanese campus should contact Professor Scott on ext 2640.
