Law champs win mooting competition
Two final year students from the Department of Law have
won one of the country's most prestigious mooting competitions.
Anne Gray and Carolyn Meikle made it through three gruelling rounds
before making it to the final of the Oxford University Press (OUP)
National Mooting Competition.
They began their journey to the final by seeing off competition from
local rival Anglia Polytechnic University before coming up against
Nottingham in round two and the University of the West of England in round
three. Anne and Carolyn met the University of Reading in the final where
they tackled a case based on that of R v Sheldrake which is due to be
heard at the House of Lords this month. The final, which was judged by
Gordon Goldberg of the University of Buckingham, also saw Sheffield Hallam
come up against City University and Warwick take on Lincoln.
Anne and Carolyn shared the top prize of £1,500 which will help fund
their future study. City University received the runners up prize.
Anne, who plans to study for the Bar Vocational Course to become a
barrister, explained the history behind their mooting success: 'Carolyn
and I have mooted as a team since our first year at Essex when we won the
University mooting cup. We have now mooted together 11 times. The
experience has been great, it has really taught me a lot about how to read
cases properly and understand the reasoning behind judgements.'
Carolyn, who is now working at the Children's Legal Centre, will start
the Legal Practice Course in September: 'I have found mooting to be a
great asset, not only has it been fun but the hard work has increased my
legal research and knowledge and this has had a positive effect on my exam
results and final degree classification.'
The Oxford University Press competition was established in 1997.
Between 40 and 50 UK universities enter a team each year. For further
