'Pure theatre' at Lakeside
Review of Look Back in Anger
By W B Langdon of the Department of Computer Science
Under David Seymour's direction, students from the Centre
for Theatre Studies transformed the Lakeside Theatre stage, which is a
reasonable size, into a dingy rented bed sitter in post war, pre
black-and-white television Britain.
Almost without exception the players were very good. The final event
before the interval produced gasps from the audience. Sending us away to
the bar full of gossip and speculation, eager to see how things would fall
out.
The second half also had its share of plot twists but, like the first,
was dominated by Jimmy Porter's superb quick witted unreasonable
self-centred vitriol.
Not an easy play for either side, players or audience. It is a play I
had often heard of but never seen. Now I understand the fuss that is made
of it. That said, I doubt I will see it again, but am now glad I have seen
it once.
One came away feeling 'Thank gawd I don't live with someone like Jimmy
Porter.' Pure theatre. A thoroughly good evening and
six quid well spent.
