Honour for Essex Professor
Professor Jules Pretty, Director of the Centre for Environment and
Society, has been elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Biology.
The Institute of Biology (IOB) is the professional body for UK
biologists. It was founded in 1950 and currently has more than 16500
members working in industry, research, education and healthcare, amongst
other areas. The IOB is frequently consulted on biological issues by
Government, industry and many other organisations, and also produces
pro-active Policy Studies. Drawing on the breadth of its membership and
the expertise of its 75 Affiliated Societies, the IOB is able to produce a
balanced response which reflects the views of the biological profession as
a whole.
Professor Pretty is one of the world's leading authorities on
sustainable agriculture. He is Deputy-Chair of the government’s Advisory
Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE) and is a founding member
of the Agricultural Reform group and the Neighbourhood Think Tank. Author
of more than 150 articles, chapters and books, Professor Pretty was
co-author of a United Nations report in sustainable development which was
one of the key texts at the recent World Summit in Johannesburg and is
Chief Editor of the International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability.
Professor Pretty has also been appointed to the International Advisory
Committee for the College of Humanities and Development at China
Agricultural University in Beijing, one of the leading agricultural
education and research institutions in China.
