New Year's Honours
Vice-Chancellor Professor Ivor Crewe, and Professor of Law Françoise
Hampson, have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours List.
Professor
Crewe has been awarded a knighthood for services to higher education. He
has served as Vice-Chancellor of the University for ten years, and was
president of Universities UK for two years until July 2005, during a
period of significant change for the higher education sector. He was the
voice of vice-chancellors in discussions with the government, parliament
and the media during the passage of the Higher Education Bill, which led
to the introduction of variable tuition fees for students of up to £3,000.
Professor
Hampson receives the OBE for services to international law and human
rights. She is an independent expert member of the United Nations
Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. Professor
Hampson has successfully litigated many cases before the European Court of
Human Rights in Strasbourg, and was awarded Human Rights Lawyer of the
Year jointly with her colleague from the University’s Human Rights Centre,
Professor Kevin Boyle, in 1998.
