Retirement of leading Professor marked
The formal retirement of Professor Leonore Davidoff from the Department
of Sociology was marked by an international symposium on gender history,
women's history and family history at the Institute of Community Studies,
London. The event was funded by Gender and History, a highly
regarded journal which Professor Davidoff was instrumental in establishing
in 1989.
The symposium was organised around a series of roundtable discussions
in which speakers contributed to debates about a range of topics,
including gender and religion, masculinity and the public sphere, and
gender and family.
Testimony of Professor Davidoff's influence on the field of social
history was evident in both the content of the discussions and the
comments by speakers who travelled from across the UK and as far a field
as Australia, Turkey, Japan, Germany, Sweden and the USA to attend the
event. All praised her work and its importance and paid their thanks for
her much valued advice, support and friendship over the years.
Professor Davidoff was presented with a glass plaque by Professor Ida
Blom to commemorate the occasion with personal tributes paid to her by
Professor Paul Thompson, Diana Gittins and Professor Sonya Rose.
During the event it was announced that a fund was to be established
from donations from participants to the symposium and other colleagues.
The fund will be in Professor Davidoff's name and will support female
scholars working in the fields of gender history, women's history or
family history.
Enquiries wither about making a donation to the Davidoff Fund or about
its aim should be made to Megan Doolittle, e-mail
